Nestled in the rolling foothills of Snowdonia, our copper micro-distillery has become renowned for its range of award-winning small-batch spirits, including our celebrated Foragers Gin. While our carefully selected botanicals and meticulous distillation process play crucial roles, there's another hero in our story that often goes unsung: the incredibly pure water of North Wales.
Water is a fundamental component in the production of any spirit. Not only is it used in the distillation process, but it's also what we use to cut our spirits to achieve the perfect bottling strength. The quality of this water can significantly impact the final taste and character of the spirit.
At Snowdonia Distillery, we're blessed with access to some of the purest water in the United Kingdom, if not the world. This exceptional water quality is one of the secrets behind the smooth, clean taste of our spirits.
The superior quality of our water is no accident – it's the result of millions of years of geological processes that have shaped the stunning landscape around us. The Snowdonia region is characterized by its unique geology, dominated by ancient rhyolite and granite rocks.
These igneous rocks, formed from cooled magma and lava, are incredibly hard and resistant to erosion. As water percolates through this rocky terrain, it picks up very few minerals or impurities. This results in what we in the industry refer to as very low "total dissolved solids" (TDS).
Water with low TDS is prized in spirit production for several reasons:
When you enjoy a glass of Foragers Gin or any of our other spirits, you're not just tasting the expert craftsmanship of our distillers. You're also experiencing a drop of North Wales itself – water that has been naturally filtered through ancient rock formations, emerging pure and pristine, ready to become part of our award-winning spirits.
It's a taste of our landscape, our heritage, and our commitment to quality in every sip.
So the next time you raise a glass of Foragers Gin or any of our other spirits, take a moment to appreciate not just the flavors dancing on your palate, but also the millions of years of geological history that have contributed to making your drink so exceptionally smooth and pure.
